小孩子剛學說話，最先發的音也就是最容易發的音就是「爸」、「爹」、「媽」這些音，中外都是一樣的。英文Pa或Papa或Dad或Daddy都是「父親」（Father）的意思，但比Father親熱得多。所以你以後寫信，不要寫DearFather而該寫DearDad，我附一封英文給爸爸信的樣本在下面：

但Mother這個字，卻不像Father這個字這麼正式，所以常和Mom或Ma或Mamma或Mama混用，我再附一段英文小說在下面：

當然正式的說法都用Father，尤其成語裡都是固定用Father的，如：
Likefather,likeson.（有其父必有其子，子必肖其父，虎父無犬子，什麼樣的爸爸什麼樣的兒子。）
Likemother,likedaughter.（也是一樣的意思。）
我再附一段用Daddy的例子：

我們十一歲女兒的生日快到前，她暗示最想要的東西是一架自動電唱機。我們同意要是她答應好好照管，就可以送給她，當然她答應了。但我們還不知道她對此是何等認真，直到有一天我太太替她收拾房間，發現一張標題是「如何照管我的唱機」的照管規則時，我們才恍然大悟。
這些規則包括保持機件清潔、當心針頭等等。但是使人沒話講的是最後一條：「假使喝機壞了，別讓爹爹去修。」
「長服爹爹」（Daddylonglegs）不是人，是一種不咬人的蜘蛛，也叫「收割者」（harvestman），在動物學上，翻作「盲蜘蛛」。它的腿，可以說丟就丟，遇到危險，它就丟個腿騙敵人，敵人注意到腿，它就趁機跑了。（壁虎也有這種本領，不過壁虎丟的是尾巴。）
中國有句古話「毒蛇在手，壯士斷臂」，因為不斷臂毒液就會蔓延，人就給毒死了。所以「壯士斷臂」是表示有決心、有決心、肯犧牲、不因小失大的意思。可是人斷了臂，不能再生一隻，「長腿爹爹」的腿，像壁虎尾巴一樣，斷了卻可以再生出來。許多小動物，實在比人奇妙得多、有辦法得多。
